This charming statue is the unofficial Sandusky, Ohio mascot. It stands on top of a large fountain in the middle of Washington Park in the downtown area. At night the fountain is illuminated with colored lights. The statue was installed in 1895 by Voltaire Scott. He purchased a two story hotel in the downtown area and wanted his guests to have a more beautiful view. A small park was established across the street from the hotel with this statue as a centerpiece. Damage from a tornado and the need for a parking lot in 1935 brought this small park to an end. The statue was moved to Washington Park where it stood until the 90's. Unfortunately, vandals damaged the statue several times and the original was replaced with a bronze casting. The original zinc statue is now on display in the lobby of our City Hall.
In this view you can see more of the fountain as well as the flowers planted around it.
I come from a creative family who loved art, music, photography and sometimes random hiking adventures. I am thankful to them for giving me the gift of curiosity, creativity and a love of the natural world. I incorporate all of these aspects into my work and enjoy working with a variety of mediums. I also enjoy making detailed collages using recycled materials, in this way I can do my part to help the environment and create something beautiful. Thank you for visiting!
