Description
A painted turtle basks in the afternoon sun on a tiny little "island" in the marsh. This is either the eastern or midland painted turtle, it can be difficult to distinguish between the two. I spotted this one while walking along the trail at Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve in northern Ohio. They have olive green skin with red and yellow stripes and segmented hard shells. During mating season the marsh is teeming with these turtles and they can be easily observed. Different subspecies of painted turtle are abundant throughout North America and the yellow bellied slider, a close relative, is a popular pet.
