Description
This scenic view is of the Castalia Quarry Reserve in Castalia, Ohio. The area was quarried for limestone starting in 1870 and continued for well over 100 years. In 1965 the quarry was closed and it wasn't until 1987 that 110 acres of the land was donated to the Erie Metroparks. Ever since, the quarry has been maintained by Erie Metroparks and has slowly been returning to it's natural state. A two mile trail loops around the quarry and has an observation platform for hikers to enjoy this unusual landscape. The quarry has lakes, forested areas, an abundance of wildlife and if you look closely enough you can find fossils in the rock walls. Overall, it is truly one of the most unique parks I have ever been to here in Ohio.
