Description
Original drawing of a Squirrel Glider.
The Squirrel Glider, not to be confused with the flying squirrel, is actually a nocturnal gliding possum. Thought to be extinct in South Australia since 1939, genetic tests confirmed their continued presence. They are an Australian species and are classified as near threatened. Their natural predators include dogs, cats, foxes and owls. Humans are also a big threat for clearing and breaking up their natural habitats. They make their homes in dry sclerophyll forest and woodlands in south-eastern Australia. In Queensland they occupy wetter eucalypt forest. An unusual critter to be sure.
