Description
I captured this White Heron or Egret in the middle of snatching a fish out of the water. Shot taken at Old Woman Creek Estuary and reserve.
The White Heron can be found across most tropical and temperate regions of the world. This partially migratory bird breeds in colonies in trees close to large lakes with reed beds or wetlands. This makes Old Woman Creek the perfect breeding ground for them. They can be easily identified by their large yellow beak, brilliant white plumage and long black legs and feet. They have a slow flight with the neck retracted which distinguishes them from storks or cranes which extend their neck during flight. They feed in shallow water on fish, small mammals, frogs and occasionally reptiles and insects. The Heron will slowly stalk it's prey or stand motionless until it's prey is within striking distance and spear it with it's long, sharp bill.
Quite the majestic and graceful bird.
