Description
These lotus plants were growing along the shore of Sandusky Bay in Sandusky, Ohio. A view from the hidden world lying beneath the lotus plants. The leaves on the surface of the water have started to turn from green to autumnal orange and yellow.
The Water Lotus or Nelumbo nucifera is known by many names: Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India and simply, lotus. These plants are often confused with the water lily, an entirely different plant. The water lotus has a distinctive center which will become the familiar circular seed pod lotuses are famous for. This aquatic perennial will remain viable for many years in the most favorable circumstances. The oldest recorded lotus germination was from 1300 year old seeds recovered from a dry lakebed in China. If you have the opportunity to see a water lotus in its natural setting I highly recommend you do so. A riverbed full of these is a magnificent sight.
